Blog: UK Government Pledges 100,000 New EV Chargers Across England

The UK government has pledged 100,000 new EV chargers across England to support the growing demand for electric vehicles. Learn what this means for drivers, infrastructure, and the future of EV travel.

The UK government has announced a major boost to electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, pledging to install 100,000 new public EV chargepoints across England in the coming years. This commitment is part of the country’s wider strategy to support the transition to zero-emission transport and ensure the infrastructure keeps pace with the rising number of EVs on the road.

Supporting a Growing EV Market

With over 75,000 public chargers already installed and more than 680,000 home chargepoints in use, the UK has made strong progress. However, as EV ownership increases, the demand for convenient, reliable, and widespread public charging grows even faster.

This latest pledge is part of the government’s plan to hit 300,000 public chargers by 2030. However, industry experts suggest the actual number needed could be closer to 500,000–550,000 to meet future demand.

Investment and Funding

To achieve this, the government is investing £2.3 billion in EV infrastructure, including:

  • £381 million Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund to help local councils roll out on-street chargers.

  • £70 million Rapid Charging Fund to upgrade grid connections at motorway service areas.

Private companies are also contributing more than £6 billion to expand rapid and ultra-rapid charging networks nationwide.

Addressing the Challenges

While this announcement is a positive step, several challenges remain:

  • Regional gaps: Rural areas lag behind urban centres in charging access.

  • Grid capacity: Delays in grid connections are slowing installations.

  • Charger types: More ultra-rapid chargers are needed on major routes, not just slower on-street points.

  • Affordability: Public charging still costs significantly more than home charging, impacting those without off-street parking.

What This Means for Drivers

The addition of 100,000 new chargepoints will provide much-needed reassurance to current and future EV drivers. Whether commuting, travelling long distances, or charging without a driveway, a more robust and accessible charging network will help make EV ownership more convenient for everyone.

At XLCR, we welcome this move and look forward to seeing how it improves the EV experience for our customers. As infrastructure grows, so does confidence in making the switch to electric.
